Missionaries of the Week Gloria Carlson
Gloria, with her husband Charlie and their three children, was a career missionary in Ecuador. They all learned Spanish and little did they know how well the Lord was to continue to use that skill. When the Carlsons came home from the field about 10 years ago, they settled in Sunnyvale and became members of First Baptist Church of Los Altos. Gloria soon became involved teaching children in our Sunday School and then with Child Evangelism. She began to teach Good News Clubs in Spanish as well as in English. She also does teacher training in English and in Spanish. When CEF wanted to translate their material into Spanish, they asked Gloria to do the translating. This keeps her very busy. She has a skillful language helper who proofs the pages. Gloria's son, Kevin, is now back in Ecuador as a missionary. Knowing the language and culture has brought him immediately into service as a seminary teacher. He and his wife, Marcy, who also grew up in Ecuador, make good use of Child Evangelism material in teaching children. Their daughter, Rachel, went short-term in the summer of 2005 to Honduras. Again, fluency in Spanish was a great asset to the team. Charlie is a teacher in our Adult Fellowship Classes, but teaches in English. Gloria ministered in Ecuador one month last fall doing teacher training there. Pray for her in the many ministries in which she is involved. Home Address: 1220 Vienna Drive, #495, Sunnyvale CA 94089 |
13 Sunday ~ Missionary of the Week: Gloria Carlson, local (Child Evangelism Fellowship). Pray for Gloria as she prepares for a variety of teacher-training opportunities in the next few months. Her annual training time in Ecuador will be later in 2008. 14 Monday ~ Paul Nuth (Missions Door). Paul trains church leaders in Cambodia and mentors needy Cambodian children who aren’t able to go to school. About 650 children are in the program and 70% have now received Christ as Savior. Pray for the added $300/month they need to support the program, which costs $650/month. 15 Tuesday ~ Radha and Samen Manickam, Seattle/Cambodia (Missions Door). Pray for 55 core pastors being trained at Siem Reap Training Center. The goal is for them to be able to pass on much-needed training to local area pastors and leaders. 16 Wednesday ~ Our Ministry Team in North Africa. Pray for new ministry teams being trained to enter areas not presently having Christian witness, and for all current North African projects and associates as our team travels to encourage and plan with each. 17 Thursday ~ Arab World Ministries. Storytelling is an age-old tradition in the Arab world. A Christian group who wanted to share the good news of Jesus Christ with Arabic-speaking people began a radio program about the lives of men and women in the Bible, called Champions of Faith. It became so popular on radio that they turned it into a television program. Pray for fruit from these programs going right into Arab homes. Birthday ~ Clarence Henderson, WA 18 Friday ~ Community Pregnancy Centers have three locations in the South Bay area. Pray for the staff and volunteers who come from over 30 different churches in Santa Clara County and have the goal of meeting the needs of the whole person: physical, emotional and spiritual. 19 Saturday ~ CBA/NC. Mariner’s Church at Half Moon Bay is growing and growing. When Pastor Richardson came, there were 40 attending: adults and children. Now 60 junior high and high school students joyously attend services with new youth pastor, Joey McCloskey (and his wife, Kristina), at a 4th worship service attuned to their age group. |
